Program: Pamela Nall of Habitat for Humanity (Habitat Bergen; habitatbergen.org) discussed the organization’s work and started her presentation by what has been done in Englewood in the past. Spearheaded by Richard Bennett three houses were constructed by members of the club and others on Third St.in 1994 in the City. A garden was also established and tended. Pointing out that Bergen County, one of the richest in the US (and the world) that three and a half percent of the population is homeless. Prospective homesteaders are qualified through a committee of Habitat Bergen. They have to be able to sustain the mortgage (interest free, I think) and contribute 400 hours to constructing the edifice. Anyone may volunteer; no skills required. Many organizations contribute; Churches, Synagogues, high schools, colleges Elks, and you name it have helped. 80% of the work is done by volunteers and often the land is deeded to the local habitat. (There are 1400 different habitats in the US) . Materials are purchased from Lowes, Home Depot, etc frequently at reduced rates. Furniture is often donated.
