Program
Captain Bill spoke about our drinking water and the need for keeping the Hackensack River clean and sustainable. He got his start as an activist in 1990 with the New York New Jersey Bay Keeper organization. The River is improving thanks to efforts like The Hackensack River Keepers the first population has gone from roughly 5 species to over 65 different species thanks to clean up efforts over the years. The Captain is going through efforts now with the Environmental Protection Agency to get the bed of the River itself on the Superfund Site for cleanup. There will be a final decision on this sometime in March. They are based in Hackensack at 231 Main Street and the door is always open during normal business hours. If we go through a natural cleanup it could take 150 200
plus years to take care of itself, if the EPA is involved we could get this accomplished in 30 years. Captain Bill also operates a paddling center in Overpeck Park. There are now Bald Eagles in Kearny Point as verified by The River Keeper assocation. Bill took several questions from the members after. Special thanks was also given to his assistant Caitlin Doran.
